Wolfgang Scherring @ wosc.de contributed this comment:

"You can perform the same setting without the graphical gconf-editor using the following command (e.g. via SSH):

gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/layouts --type List --list-type String [aa]"

Anyhow, thanks for writing it up, that saved me some major headaches.

One important thing I missed: You MUST edit the FS_MOUNTOPTIONS line. If not, the drive will be mounted read only. Add the following FS_MOUNTOPTIONS:

FS_MOUNTOPTIONS="-fstype=vfat,gid=floppy,dmask=0007,fmask=0117"

Lastly, make sure you're in the 'floppy' group. It's used here because it's historically the default group for user read/write access to floppy drives.

% id

You should see (floppy)

Comment on Elisa - a Python-based Media Center from Fluendo by jesse

Update - the Python 2.5 requirement was odd - the Debian package auto installed 2.5 but runs on 2.4. Anyway, it seems to work fine "out of the box", or "right off the apt" if you will.

One peeve - in it's current state Elisa only renders media found via uPnP. That's cool for when Elisa is part of a larger system, but during development I'd like to see a shim allowing to read from the local file system.

So far, Blogdesk is the clear winner. It's the only blogging client that can upload images to Wordpress. If only there were a Linux version. :(

If you're searching, searching, searching for that special key/value pair, you can find it with gconftool-2.

To view the schemas:
 % gconftool-2 --all-dirs /
/desktop
/apps
/GNOME
/system
/schemas

To dump the entire XML file for brute force grepping:
 % gconftool-2 --dump / > gconf.out.xml

To change the default screensaver, edit the file
/usr/share/gconf/defaults/10_gnome_screensaver

I like popsquares, so enter that one inside the brackets. Looks like this:

/apps/gnome-screensaver/themes [popsquares]
